Atlantik LED Pendants at MACNA 2012

Atlantik LED Pendants at MACNA 2012

Orphek will be introducing two new prototype Atlantik LED Pendants at MACNA this year.
WHY ORPHEK ATLANTIK EXCELLS AS THE BEST LED AQUARIUM LIGHT
Aquarium led lighting

There will be a standard version for deeper aquariums and a wide version for shallower aquariums.

Each model will use a different lens to produce the coverage designed for that model.

Orphek will post a news blog on our site when the final design has been established.

The new Orphek Atlantik Pendants will offer multiple color high power LEDs with blue and white LEDs.

Four Orphek special red and four high range UV LEDs are also used.

There are six rows of thirteen LEDs, the 78 LEDs run at 2,4Watt  each which provides an ideal PAR/PUR level for deep aquariums.

There are four separate programmable channels that offer independent control of each channel, both by time and intensity and each channel has full dimming capabilities.

Each channel is independently driven by a high efficiency LED driver.

This allows the user to customize the light output by adjusting the output of the various channels independently via a controller that is included with the Atlantik.

Atlantik by orphek

The Orphek Atlantik draws 186 watts of power and measures 24.21 x 9.37 x 2.11 inches.

If multiple Atlantik Pendants are needed for larger tanks, the purchase of additional controllers is not necessary.

In the event of a power failure, the programs are saved by a lithium powered battery backup.

There are four separate programmable channels that offer independent control of each channel, both by time and intensity and each channel has full dimming capabilities. Each channel is independently driven by a high efficiency Mean Well LED driver. This allows the user to customize the light output by adjusting the output of the various channels independently via a controller or software program. A computer is not necessary to program the Atlantik, this can be accomplished with the included controller if no PC is available. The Orphek Atlantik draws ~186 watts of power and measures 24.21 x 9.37 x 2.11 inches.

If multiple Atlantik Pendants are needed for larger tanks, the purchase of additional controllers is not necessary. The program(s) can be downloaded to each pendant by the controller via a USB connection mounted on the top of each Atlantik pendant. In the event of a power failure, the programs our saved by a lithium powered battery backup.

The Atlantik will be available in two models; our standard model for deep aquariums and a wide angle model for shallower aquariums. Our deep model will incorporate narrow optical lenses to penetrate and focus the light in deep aquariums.

A detailed product page of the Atlantik Pendant will soon be available under our product page tab found on our website.

PR72 LED Pendant Series VIDEO

Orphek is pleased to announce a new product, the PR72 LED Pendant Series

Orphek is pleased to announce our new plug and play PR72 LED Pendant which will be available in two different models.

PR72 Reef

PR72 Freshwater Planted

LED pendant for reef and freshwater planted aquarium.

Now, an inexpensive LED pendant to light your reef and freshwater planted aquarium.

All models feature 36 of our high PAR two watt LEDs with 60 degree lenses which equal the power output of a 150 watt HQI lamp but use 50% less power.  The LEDs are the same high quality LEDs used in the PR156. The Orphek PR72 Series employ a very efficient Mean Well external power supply to minimize heat in the pendant housing.  The dimmable Mean Well LED Driver allows us to configure the PR72 to interface with most digital controllers currently on the market.  The pendants include a cable with an RJ45 connector for direct hook up to an Apex Variable Speed/Dimming Module (VDM).  The RJ45 plug can also be removed allowing connection to interface boards with + and – terminals.

LED ratios shown below for all models.

The heat sink used in the pendant is designed to effectively dissipate heat thereby increasing the life of the LED diodes and minimizing heat entering the aquarium to negligible levels without the use of a fan.  No timer is included but a standard inexpensive lamp timer can be used to control the photoperiod if no digital controller is used.

RED SEA MAX HOOD CONVERSION

RED SEA MAX HOOD CONVERSION TO ALLOW USE OF ORPHEK NILUS

Many aquarists in moderate to warm climates have complained about heat buildup in their Red Sea Max 250 (RSM 250) aquariums due to the 234 watt, six lamp, T5 lighting system that is presently being used in this hood.  Apparently the cooling fans are insufficient to keep the water temperature down to acceptable levels in the aforementioned climates.

Arie  Aquacompleet  (Van Beethovensingel 32 , 3055 JK Rotterdam) from the Netherlandshas sent us some photos of his conversion of the RSM 250 Hood to accept the Orphek Nilus LED Pendant.  This is for informational purposes only and in no way does Orphek support, endorse or guarantee their Nilus fixture when used in this fashion.

Orphek highly recommends that you not allow the acrylic T5 lens cover to support the Nilus fixture but rather it be fastened to the top of the hood.  We also recommend cutting holes in the top of the hood to allow the full cooling capabilities of the fans used in the Nilus Pendant.

Pieter van Suijlekom 6m Reef Aquarium Revisited

Pieter van Suijlekom's 6m Reef Aquarium Revisited

In the February, 2006 issue of Reefkeeping Magazine, Pieter van Suijlekom’s six meter, yes, six meter (19.5 feet) reef tank was featured as the tank of the month, truly a hard act to follow

This massive aquarium has a total volume of 2,074 gallons.  The tank itself is 1,582 gallons but a 125 gallon seahorse tank, 152 gallon frag tank, and a 264 gallon sump are incorporated into the system.

The front glass was bent by Teherode Glas located in Voorthuizen, Netherlands and is the largest size that would fit in their oven.  The tank construction and set up was performed by Arie van Leerdam’s company, Aqua Compleet.

The original lighting consisted of:

6 – 400 watt HQI 14,000K lamps

3 – 1000 watt HQI 14,000K lamps

4 – HO Phillips 140 watt actinic 03 tubes

The total light output consumes 5.8 kilowatts of power per hour.  Without knowing the energy cost per kilowatt hour in the Netherlands, the average cost per month to run this system in the United States at 10 hours per day is nearly $250.00 per month.  Obviously a less expensive means was needed to reduce energy consumption and Pieter recently chose 16, Orphek high output DIF 100XP LED Pendants to replace the original HQI lighting.  Using the same figures for average U.S. energy costs, the energy use would drop to $67.20 per month, a yearly savings of nearly $2,200.00 per year while still providing the light output and a much better PUR spectrum  needed for all Pieter’s corals.  This figure does not include yearly lamp replacement which in itself is a hefty expense.

Sixteen DIF 100XP LED Pendants are used to replace the original HQI lighting

Obviously a tank of this size requires a massive amount of water flow and this is accomplished by four Red Dragon in tank pumps with a total output of 48,000 l/h (12,672gph).  Another pump rated at 30,000 l/h (7,920gph) is used as a wave maker and changes direction of flow every two minutes.  The return pump from the sump is a 19,000 l/h (5,016gph) feeding four bulkheads.  This represents a total flow rate of 97,000 l/h (25,608gph).  These large pumps require operation by motor starters equipped with thermal heaters that trip if over current is detected.

The relay panel also consists of a GHL controller, DC power supply, and an APS (automated power supply) which in the event of a power failure will provide essential functions for the aquarium.  The GHL controller provides the photo period as well as dimming functions for the 16 Orphek DIF 100XP Pendants.

What are Pieter’s ideal water parameters?  Pieter recommends the following:

Temperature – 24-26C (75-79F)

Salinity – 37ppt (1.0279)

pH – 8-8.3

dKH – 10.0

Ca – 450ppm

Mg – 1470 (The three to one recommended ratio with calcium is only 9ppm off on the calcium       parameter, excellent!).
